BACH 78 – BOAT SHED

RENOVATION DURING

COVID 19 LOCKDOWN

Volunteers started the initial structural work but the significant remaining tasks of framing, re-cladding and fabricating the door of the historic shed were completed under COVID 19 lock-down guidelines by RIHCT’s Bookabach managers who remained on the island in their own bubble.

“We are particularly proud of the reinstated finial and custom built door – made specifically to match the originals shown in 1930s photographs.”

Susan Thomas – Restoration Manager

Strict restoration guidelines from the ICOMOS charter were followed. Restoration was based on respect for existing fabric with the rear wall with its unique winch box left intact. All sound materials were saved and strengthening measures were discreetly hidden behind the patina of recycled iron cladding. The roofing iron and flashing are left over sheets from the re-roofing of baches 103 and 78.

The shed now stands proud greeting all who enter the bay once again.
